"Hayya Alal Falah" IAS_NUQ Documentary Fellowship

Selected as one of 15 undergraduate fellows from a highly competitive pool of applicants in NUQ's fifth cohort of Global Undergraduate Fellows, my fellowship documentary project a sound-driven documentary shot in Qatar that examines everyday Qatari Islamic life through sensory and sonic practices. As the film places special emphasis on sound, I'd spent months working very closely with my faculty mentor and the IAS team to work on crafting the soundscape world of the film. This looked like countless treatment revisions, location scouting of various mosques and households across Doha, and an intimate ethnographic approach to shooting the rhythmics moments and practices muslims conduct during and after prayer.

I spent my pre-production months training extensively on the MixPre sound mixer and became accustomed to how to audio-plan according to the circumstances of different locations. As I had to collaborate with a DOP while simultaneously directing and sound-recording my film, I learnt quickly how to film using a double-system of independent camera and sound recording. I learnt too how to send wireless feeds to my boom assistant while I managed my microphone levels directly through my mixer. This collaboration became invaluable to me, as learning how to manage sounds and visuals side-by-side with a production team towards the same common goal strengthened my skills as a research student especially interested in how sounds and visuals negotiate together in the human senses.
